Medical Assistance in Dying

The Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying held its first meeting to elect its chairs and vice-chairs. Senator Yonah Martin was elected as the Senate joint chair, and MP Marcus Powlowski was elected as the House of Commons joint chair. MP Tamara Jansen was elected as a vice-chair, MP Luc Thériault was elected as another vice-chair, and MP James Maloney was elected as a third vice-chair.

During the proceedings, MP Luc Thériault raised a concern about imbalanced audio volume in the committee room, noting that the sound for witnesses, the chair, and members was much louder than for the interpreters in his earpiece. He requested that sound tests be conducted for in-room participants to balance the volume and prevent hearing issues. The committee acknowledged his comment.

The committee also introduced its clerks and researchers. The meeting concluded with the election of all positions and the scheduling of future meetings, with no other business resolved.
