International Trade

The House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade held its first meeting of the new Parliament to elect its chair and vice-chairs and adopt routine motions. Peter Fonseca nominated Judy Sgro for chair, Matt Jeneroux nominated Adam Chambers for first vice-chair, and Steeve Lavoie nominated Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay for second vice-chair. All were elected by acclamation. The committee then adopted a series of standard procedural motions, including those on analyst services, a subcommittee on agenda and procedure, meeting without quorum, witness questioning time, and document distribution.

Liberal MP Yasir Naqvi moved a motion for a study of at least three meetings on free trade agreements, rules-based trade, and rules of origin in foreign investment promotion and protection agreements. The motion was not voted on during the meeting.

Bloc Québécois MP Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay moved a motion concerning the Canada Border Services Agency's Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) system. The motion noted that a transitional measure expired on May 20, 2025, causing border delays and financial burdens, and recommended that the minister and CBSA implement measures such as a contingency plan for held goods, online payment for Type C entries, and exemptions for small importers. The motion was agreed to with support from Conservative MPs Adam Chambers and Jason Groleau.

Conservative MP Adam Chambers proposed a motion to resurrect two reports completed in the last Parliament—on supply chains and fisheries—so they could be reported to the House. The motion was not voted on, and the meeting concluded with the matter left unresolved.
