Environment and Sustainable Development

The committee met for its first meeting of the session to elect a chair and two vice-chairs. Bruce Fanjoy nominated Angelo Iacono for chair, and the motion carried. Branden Leslie nominated Ellis Ross for first vice-chair, and Eric St-Pierre nominated Patrick Bonin for second vice-chair; both motions were adopted. The committee then heard brief introductions from the Library of Parliament analysts, Sarah Yakobowski and Alison Clegg, who described the research support they would provide.

Patrick Bonin gave notice of a motion for a future study on Canada’s 2030 emissions reduction plan and its alignment with Paris Agreement commitments. He also moved a separate motion asking the analysts to compile all information from an unfinished study in the previous Parliament on the environment and climate impacts related to the Canadian financial system, so that new members could review it. Branden Leslie supported sharing the existing documents but cautioned against asking analysts to produce a draft report without a formal motion authorizing the study.

The committee did not vote on either of Bonin’s motions. The meeting adjourned with the notice of motion recorded and the compilation motion left unresolved.
