The committee debated a motion from Raquel Dancho (CPC) concerning 1,000 job losses at Algoma Steel. The motion proposed that the committee report to the House condemning the lack of job guarantees in the Liberal government’s $400-million loan to Algoma, and immediately summon the Minister of Industry, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Jobs and Families, the CEO of Algoma Steel, and United Steelworkers representatives to testify.

Conservative members argued the government had handed out subsidies without securing job protections, pointing to similar concerns with Stellantis. Liberal members countered that the federal investment had saved two-thirds of the jobs and helped Algoma transition to greener production, and that the real threat was U.S. tariffs. They urged the committee to focus on passing Bill C-15, the budget implementation act, which contains enhanced EI benefits and workforce supports for displaced workers. The Bloc Québécois member supported the motion as drafted, though he acknowledged it could be reworded to report after hearing witnesses.

No vote was taken. The Bloc member moved to adjourn the meeting, and the committee did not resolve the motion.
