Subcommittee on Private Members' Business

The subcommittee met to consider Senate public bills placed on the order of precedence. Committee researcher François Delisle noted that for the first time in this Parliament, the list contained only Senate public bills. He reminded members that the only criterion for designating a bill as non-votable was whether a similar bill had already been voted on in the current Parliament, which was not the case. He therefore recommended that all bills be deemed votable.

Christine Normandin asked a hypothetical question about what would happen if two similar bills were being studied simultaneously and one passed before the other. Delisle replied that the remaining bill would typically lose its votable status. The clerk added that the House cannot vote on the same question twice, and that the Speaker would intervene to halt consideration of the other bill, withdrawing it from the order of precedence and the Order Paper.

The subcommittee agreed to accept the recommendation. All bills, including S-211, were designated votable. No other decisions or unresolved matters were recorded.
